Banky W, JJC and Psquare Nominated for the 2010 MOBO Awards

Banky W, veteran JJC (a.k.a Skillz) and Psquare were among the nominees announced for this year’s MOBO Awards. The trio are all up for Best African Act of the year in what is a rather crowded list.

This is the 15th edition of the MOBO Awards which were founded by Kanya King in 1996 to celebrate the urban music scene in Europe. These days however, MOBO celebrates the urban music of not only Europe, but from around the world.

The winners of the MOBO Awards are chosen by the voting public. Only the best in jazz and gospel are not up for public voting. To cast your vote for the MOBO Awards go to www.mobo.com.

The 2010 MOBO Awards will take place at Liverpool Echo Arena on the 20th Oct,2010. Other notable nominees include Taio Cruz, Sade and Dizzee Rascal.

Past Nigerian nominees for the MOBO Best African Act include Tony Tetuila, Psquare, 9ice, ElDee, Femi Kuti, Nneka and 2face Idibia. Idibia, 9ice and Nneka have won the prize in 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively. While this is the first time JJC and Banky are getting a nod, popstars Psquare have been nominated twice before.

And although the MOBOs have become less popular and relevant globally these past years, the award still means a lot to Nigerians and Africans, in an industry where many are keen to exploit any opportunity to get their voices heard in Europe and America.
