HOW I STARTED ACTING
He is one of the fast rising actor that has kept us glue to our Television screens over the years. His incursion into action wasn't an accident but a passion he has kept inside of him burning since childhood. And when celebrityworld tried to find answers to some questions about his person and passion for acting. The Ogbomosho born, Abeokuta based actor was quick to open up on several issues we confronted him with. Oluwasegun Ajeyemi popularly know as Awilo took us through his world at a movie location in Abeokuta. Excerpts.
Can we meet your sir?
My name is Oluwasegun Kolawole Ajeyemi popular know as Awilo.
How did you come about the name Awilo?
I can about the name in 1999/ 2000.We do artist night here in Abeokuta, then it was Olaiya and Demeji only doing movie. movie wasn't as popular as it was now. Then I was with Odun Ade Adekola, Segun Ogungbe, the an artist called Mr. Paragon and other we do artist night at auto. We did a stage performance which was also the same time Awilo music came out. I played the character of Awilo at that time, I did sang and the name just stuck and the name we everywhere. And since then I have been using the name.
And how did you got into the movie industry?
I can remember vividly and it was in 1999 when I can back from Ogbomosho. One of my cousins came to me. He has an aunty, called sister Tutu whom we went to meet together. She took me somewhere and after some time when the place wasn't what I actually wanted, I had to move on. And in 1999, I met Segun Ogunbe and since then I have been with him.
And what are you into in Ogbomosho before you moved to Abeokuta?
I was schooling actually and working as well. I finished from Ogbomosho grammar School. But there was a small problem between my mum and dad and I had to move to Abeokuta.
You just mentioned your mum and dad, were they both in support of your acting ambition?
And that was part of the problem. They both objected because they were both born again christain. But now, my mum has concerted to it because my dad is more. Then you know they believed that who ever dose acting, he or she is a thug and all that. By by force, I started acting because I understand the kind of background that I come from. Now my mum is happy about it and like I said my dad is late. He died about two years ago.
You are casted more often as a bad boy in movies. Is it a deliberate. Is it a deliberate or what?
Since I started the stage play, people noticed that I deliver scripts properly. During my stage performances I acted a role that I have to act like I am a rascal which I delivered well. And couple with that, people started penning me for such roles. But since last year when I acted 'Ijiya Ife', I started changing my character from that bad boy thing to the serious charater of a thing. And that was when I did my first film 'Ijiya Ife'. And since then people started seeing another part of me.
But all the slangs that you use, especially those slangs of you used in 'Sunday Dagboru'. How do you come about those slangs. Do you learn them or what?
I learnt every slang when I started acting because since 1999 that I came into acting, I have not delved into another thing. Even when things weren't going the way it was expected, I still waited to learn every thing. What happened in the film 'Sunday Dagboru' I have never done it before but I be live there is nothing anybody cant learn. When Odunlade gave me the script as a supporting character, I was like this is big. And I remember thungs disturb us many times when we are on location and the experience also really helped me as well.
How is your relationship with Odunlade Adekola like cause it seems both of you are always together in the same movie and all that?
He is my brother, my boss and my father. Becasue since 1999 that I have been with Segun, I have also started a relationship with him as well at that time. We were all together in the Igi Aloye cacus, he is my boss in the business. His father was a pastor as well and I am a gentle type that I dont go beyond my bounded since then, he took me as a brother. And now that he is famous and popular, he takes me every where he works.
Do you ever think you will ever go into acting even when you are in Ogbomosho?
It all started when I was in primary Six because my father is an Apala singer. And he is based in the North where he dose music. I started acting from my primary school but since they said I shouldnt do it, I opted out and when I found out that acting is my calling then I moved back to acting.
What are the challenges so far?
The challenges are so much. The belive around town is that since I act, I should have made a lot of money. since I started acting, nobody to help and support and that is why I made my first movie just last year. Even people that believed I can make movie my self and that are purpose to help are not even helping till date. All we do is school play and all that. But thank God for the like of Ahamed Alasari and co that believed in us and started putting us in their movies and all that. But thank Gos and Thank God for their life.
You are a member of the 'Igi Aloye group. Who actually is the leader?
Segun Ogunda
Do you get invitations from outside the state since you started?
Yes. In vitations have started coming in. I have been going to place. From Oshogbo, Ibadan, Lagos and other places.
What comes to your mind when you were given a script. What do you think or remember?
The only thing that comes to my mind when I get scripts is, I put myself into the character before acting and when I get on set, I flow and I move on from there. I see myself in the name of the character I am supose to play.
How do you relate with your female fans that cluster almost around everywhere?
That happens every where. If you are nobody no one cares about you. Since two years ago its been alarming especially last year I was shocked because I keep switching off my phone almost every time. I don't know where that get my numbers. Some even go to the extent of if just only once. But I keep reminding myself of where I come from and the family I come from.
Of all the applications that you received, how many where you able to approve?
No one was approved because I know where I am coming from and where I am going to.
Dose it means you have no one somewhere or what?
Yes I have a wofe and she is Bukola Adeyeye. She is also an actress and was also in 'Sunday Dagboru'.
Don't you ever think for once about the high level of celebrity separation, do you think it might affect your relationship because it is ever where in the world?
Yes we have not yet formerly our our wedding but we live together. I m not bothered of all the separation thing because she comes form a good Christian home which I also come from. We atended the same church and side acting is what we wanted we just have to do keep it up with guildiance from the church that we both attend. I am not afraid and she is also not the wayward type and every one can testify to that so we are both good to go.
Now that the hasn't fame hasn't come, don't you think when the fame fully comes, don't you think that might change?
No it wont change.
Where do you hope to be in the next few years?
I don't want to be like anybody. I just want to be fine and successful. Thats all.
What project are you currently working on at that moment?
I am working on 'Ijugbon'. And my private film that I am working on i don't want to mention the title because of security reasons because we have not registered it. But watch out for more of me and my works in the coming years. And want to say many thanks to all those that has supported me over the years. Thank you all.
