KoroNation Unveils on Sunkanmi Diary

A Political Feature-piece by Ademola Olarewaju

There comes a time in the socio-political history of a people when to sit idly as things go bad becomes a sin of great consequence – some of us believe now is the time to unite, mobilise and stand against the perpetuation of one man’s stranglehold on Lagos. This emerging dynasty has held power since 1999 in a manner that defies political understanding – making Lagos the only state in the Southwest that has made its democratic freedom a ceremonial enthronement of the candidate approved by this small cabal led by one man who lives somewhere on Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi.

To fight this oligarchy that has turned our Lagos into a plutocratic society where development is measured by strides in the most urbane areas requires an acceptable platform with proven structures separate from those of the party that has ruled Lagos since 1999. It also requires a man with a strong force of personality, charisma, proven leadership qualities, campaign organisational acumen and massive grassroots support.

There is only one party that can defeat the APC in Lagos with a combination of proven structures, federal might and the right candidate, there is only one man that can lead the party to this electoral goal with a combination of street credibility, political sagacity, intellectual grounding and a thorough knowledge of Lagos; that party is the PDP and this man is Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.

From being Local Government Chairman in 1999 to being Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture then winning elections as a senator in 2003 and leading the PDP to its closest electoral charge since the unfortunate death of Engr. Funsho Williams, Obanikoro became an Ambassador and is now a Minister at the federal level. No candidate in PDP has his clout; no other can inspire change like he can. Since crossing from the Alliance for Democracy to the Peoples Democratic Party in December 2004, Obanikoro has never looked back but pressed on with undying loyalty to the party.

Our position is clear about the status of Lagos as primus inter pares among all states in Nigeria – Lagos thrives not because of one person or one cabal but because from the very first time the Portuguese set foot on the shores of Badagry Beach, trade became the driving force of the state. Commerce, enterprise, business – these are the ideas around which Lagos is built and this is what runs the state. If the concept of trade is what drives Lagos, then perhaps change will come from a group of business-minded individuals.

The KoroNation is a group of young and middle-aged individuals from the business world eager for change and fully persuaded that while many can deliver this change, only Senator Obanikoro backed by a united party can lead the charge. We have only one agenda: to work for Senator Musiliu Obanikoro to become the candidate of the PDP on November 29, 2014 and to work for the electoral victory of PDP in the gubernatorial election of February 28, 2014.

KoroNation is a wide alliance of dozens of people who recognise the harsh reality of our societal struggle for change and the truth of how elections are won, and lost. In the build up to the PDP gubernatorial primaries and the February elections, we intend to make our voice heard, our presence felt and our impact visible – online, but also on the streets. Our aim is to highlight the side of Obanikoro that not many see – his side as an urbane, humble, unassuming but determined leader.

If our collective goal is to defeat the political machinery of Senator Bola Tinubu that believes it has a prescient knowledge of the type of leader Lagos needs, our only hope to trigger this defeat is Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.
